About the event
Join me for our introduction to sea safety for open water swimmers, this session is full of valuable information whether you are a seasoned open water swimmer or just starting out on your cold water swimming journey. We begin with a sea safety theory session at the Beeforth Hive where we discuss how tides work and affect currents, how rip currents are formed, recognising a rip current and how to escape. We'll also discuss cold water shock, SIPE (swimming induced pulmonary oedema), after drop and appropriate equipment to use.
Beeforth Hive is located next to the Rose Garden on Scarborough's South cliff:

There wil also be the option to head into the water for a short swim session and depending on the conditions will put into practise negotiating waves, choosing entry and exit points, how to raise the alarm, recognising rip currents and how to escape them. There are limited spaces for the water based activities for safety reasons
If joining in the water based part of the session I recommend wearing a wetsuit especially if you are not used to cold water swimming.
